Dear Mel,

I find myself disturbed after reading your last post. “Tarnished image”? Really?

I am afraid I would have to differ with the individual who characterized you in that way. I’d also like to remind everyone reading this that Mel has never asked for help for himself but only to keep this ministry going so that he can continue to work for others. While not a rich man, he has an adequate income that would allow him to live a simple yet comfortable lifestyle if it were not for the huge amount of money he donates to help others each month. He would be able to take cruises and enjoy a few luxuries in retirement if he were paid a salary similar to what other non-profits pay their managers.

So...what is a hero any way? I asked my eleven year old daughter that question just now. She said “it’s someone who saves your life and gives up a lot to help you. Someone who sacrifices even when nobody knows about it or says ‘thanks” ”. Then I asked her who she knows who is a hero in her opinion. First response? “Mr. Mel”. She knows that outside of her her Savior and her parents, no one in this life has done more to save her life, help her live it to the fullest and done so without thought of personal gain.

In my opinion, a man who has chosen to live a lifestyle bordering on austere in order to help others, is a hero. Someone who works a fifty-hour week (in retirement) and without pay in order to save the lives of people who in most cases he will never meet. . . that guy is a hero. Note: the vast majority will never “say thanks” either. A man who impoverishes himself in order to enrich others with good health. . . yep, that’s a hero folks and an “untarnished” one.

When my family and I were visiting with Mel, we had the chance to see his simple one-bedroom, one-office apartment and enjoy some time with him there. He loves that place, even while admitting that is is not much by most people’s standards. He loves his neighbors, he loves the pond he can see from his deck and the birds of prey that frequently visit him. Anyone who knows Mel, knows how much he loves those birds. Still, he informed us he’d be moving soon because he thinks he can find something cheaper and then would be able to donate a few hundred dollars more each month to his foundation. He has already given up his car in order to do that.

Tarnished hero, indeed.

Here is what God says about how we should live our lives in relation to others:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Mel, your light shines bright in the eyes of myself and my family and it is God who has been given the glory because of it. Keep up your amazing work and keep asking for help when you need it.

And those of you who can, please help this man keep shining brightly in the fight against Morgellons. That way you will be a shining light to others too and God will reward your sacrifice, just as He will reward Mel someday.

With all my love,

Deborah B.
