Hello Forum Friends and Fellows:

As I was listening to this past weekend's wonderful 'open topic' conference call, I was moved to weigh in a bit on the subject of candles - those wonderful things we buy to give our homes comforting aromas and ambient light.

Peter's comments on the conference call regarding the toxicity of burning synthetic scent in your home environment, as well as Mel's discussion of the cologne he used to wear, are dead on: most candles, even the so-called 'sustainable wax candles' made from soy and palm oil can actually make your environment more toxic rather than just provide benign fragrance and light from the use of synthetic fragrance oils in their so-called 'natural' production. In fact, there is a lot controversy within the essential oil/aromatherapy community regarding burning even organically sourced essential oils, such as in a 'natural' candle or in an oil warmer. There is good cause for concern. Heating essential oils at extreme temperatures causes most oils to become unstable and to change in chemical composition. While this is not always significantly harmful to us, what is significant about it is that the heat destroys the beneficial aspects of the oils, thus neutralizing their therapeutic qualities completely.

Additionally, paraffin wax, as Peter pointed out, which is used to make most cheaper candles, is actually harmful to breathe in on a regular basis. Paraffin is made from petroleum, oil shale and coal - and we all know how detrimental breathing byproducts of coal and petroleum can be to humans and animals alike, not to mention their effects on the surrounding environment.
Likewise, there is no evidence that soy wax is good to breathe and over 90% of the world's soy is derived from GMO engineered soybean crops. Palm oil, which also became a trend in 'natural' candle making, is grown by ploughing through the forest habitats of orangutans, which is harming their populations in droves.

For truly natural, sustainable home fragrance as well as a therapeutic environment for healing the best mode is a nebulizing oil diffuser. Nebulizing diffusers disperse oil molecules into the air in a 'cold' nebulization process and provide the best dispersal of pure undiluted oils with less oil used. Nebulizing diffusers are typically more expensive but they are worth the investment. The second-best oil diffusers are ultrasonic/humidifying diffusers. These diffusers use water mixed with oil to diffuse a light mist of fragrance into the air. I am not as much of a fan of these because they promote moisture. While all essential oils are generally antiseptic in some way, they are not all equal in terms of antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties. As moisture encourages mold and fungus growth, I avoid humidifiers of any type in our home right now.

But candle lovers don't despair! I still burn candles - I love the flickering light. But I only use pure beeswax candles in my home from responsible sources. They are a bit pricier than conventional candles but here are the benefits:

They burn longer than conventional candles.

They are incredibly healthy to have around because beeswax, when burned, is a natural and very effective air purifier. In fact, I had run out of beeswax candles when I acquired MD and due to being busy I hadn't been burning them at all. Once I reintroduced our home environment to beeswax candles, started running the nebulizer diffusers again and started burning our Japanese incense, I noticed a remarkable cleansing of our home environment.

Beeswax is safe around children and animals.

It is generally responsibly harvested.

They emit a light honey-wax fragrance on their own which is pleasant.

Much like the bees themselves and the honey and propolis they produce, beeswax is another natural gift from God.

You can easily make your own beeswax candles.

I won't keep 'waxing' on (haha), but suffice it to say, burning beeswax candles around in the home (safely attended to, of course) and investing in a decent nebulizing or ultrasonic diffuser will benefit the home by providing the comfort of fragrance along with the therapeutic aspects of detoxifying, purifying and healing the body and the home at the same time.

Blessings and light to all on this forum. Warmest wishes for your continued healing and peace.

Greetings, Ruth:

I think the diffuser you chose would be fine, but some others that are available to you in the UK as well as in the US and other international areas are diffusers made by Organic Aromas:

https://organicaromas.com/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MWQCNSW/ref=pd_sbs_121_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=WX3G9X86EPTTCPXK8TWE&th=1

They have free worldwide shipping and solid customer service - as well as a nice line of diffusers. I accidentally left them off my original list but they are just as good as the other 2 nebulizing diffuser companies I listed previously.

Hope this helps!
