Actually a combination of two antibiotics (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium), it is often prescribed for bacterial infections that are presumed to be resistant to other antibiotics... most likely the reason why your doctor chose it.
Additionally, Augmentin is used to treat sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. It is not recommended for patients with allergic reactions to penicillins or cephalosporins, or for pregnant or nursing mothers.
It is not considered as broad spectrum as Bactrim, and may actually have a higher tendency to promote fungal overgrowth. |
