Hi Karin,

I am so glad you are feeling better! Your last question about typical patterns of recovery is not a "dumb question" at all. . . I think we all want to ask this. The answer has to be both "no, each journey is unique" and "yes, there are some patterns you can usually rely on".

I'm wobbling here because some patterns have emerged for all of us in a general sort of way and yet as has been said so often. . . each of us have unique symptoms and durations too. For instance, my eight year old daughter and I are in the final months of our recovery and have never presented with any of the black specks and quite a few of the other "50 symptoms". We've been so grateful for that. On the other hand, scalp purging has been a long and trying ordeal for us and we are still working to eradicate this at 18 months and counting. Granted, this symptom is now nearly gone, but we're still fighting it. There is no way to predict in advance what we will face in our journey to health, or how long it will take to resolve.

That being said, there do seem to be some patterns that you can usually depend on as you heal, but they have less to do with common symptoms, and more to do with common stages of healing.

Most of us seem to reach what Mel and John refer to as being "stabilized" by around two to five months on the protocol. This stage indicates that the rapid progression of Morgellons has been halted, skin lesions are often resolved and no new symptoms are presenting. . . at least for awhile ;-). For many this stage can last several months and be a welcome break from the intensity of the early months and a hopeful time. It can be a tricky time too, because it is tempting to think that you've been one of the "lucky few" who are now nearly done with the fight and can relax. Many people are tempted to cheat on their diet or relax their vigilance during this time. If this happens symptoms return rapidly and with a vengeance. This is a time to rest physically and mentally, and to prepare for the battles still ahead, not to become over-confident. It's just a relative calm before another storm front.

For most of us that storm front involves a new stage starting around four to seven months when we begin the deeper purging of the disease itself and of toxins that have taken up residence in our bodies for a very long time. This can mean the start of things like scalp purging, the black specks you mentioned, purging of micro-fibers, the glitter-like substances, rashes and all kinds of unidentified "things" coming out of the skin. This lasts in length to around a year or more on the protocol. I started into this purging stage rather late and had a long "stabilized" stage of four months in length with virtually no symptoms prior to beginning the real purging. It was tempting to think I had made it through the toughest part of the journey and could look forward to smooth sailing from then on. I still had many battles yet to face and didn't realize it. For most of us that will be true and I think it is better to know that in advance.

People often seem to face a major herx or purge around the time they are reaching their maximum dose of MMS. It commonly presents with extreme nausea, headaches and flu-like symptoms. My daughter and I never had this cleansing crisis but you can read about the experiences of many here who did.

A lot of people seem to also face a period of discouragement and uncontrolled emotions between nine to eleven months. This is sort of an emotional or spiritual purging, as some describe it. I don't know if this is a true "pattern" but enough people have reported it that it seems important to mention it.

Many experience a new surge of energy, hopefulness and general health and well-being which they enter around 11 to 14 months. This becomes the "home-stretch" time when we slowly, and consistently check off the final stages of purging the disease from our systems.

This final stage can be of any duration. For a few fortunate warriors it has been very short. Everyone is excited when this happens and I sure applaud those amazing warriors who have been able to accomplish full healing in under 18 months. I think all new warriors should take this as an encouragement that it can be done in a shorter period of time. Just the same, you should also not become disheartened if your personal journey proves to be a longer one.

One thing I can say with certainty, all of us experience "set-backs" that seem like we are getting worse when in reality we are just purging at a higher level. Do not give in to discouragement when this happens. It most certainly will and is actually cause to look up, not to give up. Unfortunately, more often than not our fears and emotions about these purging times can cause us more problems than the symptoms themselves. This is the time to "Keep Calm and Protocol On". :-)

The truth is, it doesn't matter how long it takes to run this race, or what symptoms you may face along the way. It only matters that you run it with complete commitment and adherence to the protocol, and that you persevere until you cross the finish line and regain your life. That's why we're here anyway. . . to regain our health and get back the lives God intended us to live. . . not to set any records.

I hope these ideas of what most of us have faced will strengthen and forearm you for the journey ahead. All the time-frames I listed are approximate and no one can make any guarantees when it comes to the healing process. We can only generalize based on the experiences of the majority. I would also encourage other seasoned warriors to weigh-in with their perspective on this question as they may have better insight.

God's best blessings and strength to you as you run your own unique race,

Deborah B.

"He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:29-31
