11/14/2009 3:20:29 AM | Hi Deb, I just got done doing two rooms and my car. One room was my computer room and it was so bad, they were biting me as I was typing so I had to shut down. What I used was a small warming plate (the kind that you put a hot dish of food on a table for a party that you want to keep it from getting cold.) I had a little ceramic bowl that my daughter had made in an art class out of clay as my diffuser container. I filled it with about 8 ounces of crystals and set the container on top of the warming plate which I also placed a pie tin under the warming plate. The firt bedroom that I did was rather large (12X 14) and I was just guessing how much crystals to use (8oz). It also depends on how long you are going to run it, 8-12- or 24 hours. I suggest you put at least 8 ounces in for doing it 12 hours. When doing individual rooms be sure to close off all vents and unlock any window lock. I placed the diffuser in the middle of the room and got extension cords long enough to go out the door and hook up to another plug in another room. I used a timer which was out side the door because that way I would not have to worry about forgetting to pull the plug. I used masking tape around the door edges and a plastic bag covered with a towel, other wise the fumes come out. Be sure to seal around the cord area. You have to let the room set for at least a day. I pulled on the cord to draw the diffuser closer to the door (that is the idea of the pie tin, it helps it slide easier) you don't want it against the door because you want to be able to open the door to get it out. The smell is strong so I did use swim googles and a mask when I reached in to remove the diffusing unit. By having the window unlocked you can hopefully push the window open from the outside to get start the airing out. I had some crystals (very little though) which I did for 11 hours. Had I done it for 12 I know there would not have been any left. You can also use a coffee mug as your container and place it on one of those coffee mug warmers and to be on safe side I also put a pie tin under it. I did my car using the coffee mug and filled mug almost half full. I ran the cord out through the door seal and again hooked it up to a timer, only though for 8 hours. I also took masking tape and taped up all window and door seems. About 4 hours into diffusing my car, I peaked inside my window (I have tinted windows)it was hard to see inside but it looked like there was white foam forming on top of the mug. Boy was I curious as to what was going on. (nothing like that happened when I did the two rooms.) After the diffuser went off, I let the car sit for two days and then took off all the tape and wore my googles and mask to open up the car, roll down the windows and retrive the mug. The mug had a white mound that formed and it had the look like snow crystals. There was still some crystals in the bottom of the mug which also had some of the snow like stuff on top. But I was not going to reuse any of that so I threw it out mug and all after wrapping it up in a newspaper and plastic bag. The 2nd bedroom of which my computer is in is smaller than the first one (9X9). I put the same amount of crystals but left it on for 12 hours. However I forgot to shut the vent in this room so when I retrive the container, there was not a drop of crystals left which maybe due to the fact that I forgot to shut the vent. I could smell the menthol in the rest of the house. I performed the same operation as I did for the larger room. It worked, but for how long since the dust mites are still around? All I know is that I could not have gone another day in my computer room. Oh, and my car I bought used so I know what ever made that snow like stuff was probably there before I got the car. Gross-O!! My suggestion is to fill the container 3/4 full and that way it will probably not run out. What ever does not evaporate can be used for the next room. The smell is strong when you do it for 12 hours!! Good luck. Linda |
