Dear All, I've been thinking about compassion and how important it can be when someone we care about is going through illness or a difficult period in their life.
We all have our own struggles, and we all have days when we have more to give than others. None of us can solve another person's problems, and sometimes we don't even know what to say.
But we don't always need the right words.
Sometimes compassion is simply listening. Sometimes it's being patient when someone is struggling to explain how they feel. Sometimes it's checking in, even when you can't change what they're going through.
When people are chronically unwell, grieving, exhausted, or living with chronic pain, they may not always have the same energy, patience or emotional capacity that they normally have.
That doesn't define who they are. It's simply part of what they're going through.
We don't know what happens behind somebody else's closed doors. We don't know how much courage it took for them to get through the day, make that appointment, answer that message, or simply get out of bed.
And we don't always need to completely understand somebody else's experience in order to treat them with compassion.
I think we can have boundaries while still remembering that other people may be carrying things we know nothing about, or things we may never fully understand.
Most of us will need understanding from somebody at some point in our lives.
So perhaps what we can offer each other isn't always advice or solutions. Sometimes it's simply giving someone the space to be heard.
Because we never really know what somebody else is enduring.
And sometimes a small act of compassion can make a difficult day for someone who is unwell feel just a little less difficult.
Love Chrissie
