Essential Oils

For this maiden voyage into an exploration of essential oils, we'll focus on the broader, basic strokes. After the basics are covered in the first couple of articles/posts, we can begin delving into the more complex aspects of essential oil healing and aromatherapy, blending recipes, etc. Many of those who are afflicted on this forum are experienced in the use of essential oils in healing; others have some basic experience with a few oils; but many others are either just beginning to use essential oils in their physical and environmental regimens or have yet to begin at all. Thus, I think the broader basics are the best place to begin. So, please pardon the rudimentary nature of these first two essential oils posts if you have advanced experience in using them for healing, environmentally and in blending. As this thread grows (hopefully!), I'll include more comprehensive and specific information related to the history of essential oils, sourcing them and their impact on physical healing, physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

As Peter has already pointed out on this forum, essential oils are mentioned repeatedly in the Bible. In addition, essential oils or 'aromatics', as they were once routinely called, have ancient roots in the Egyptian, Chinese, Indian, Grecian and Roman cultures, among others, as well as in Europe during the Middle Ages. Just as in the spice trade, when people took religious pilgrimages, traveled to other countries for various reasons such as fighting in the Holy Lands during the Crusades or traveling on merchant expeditions throughout the ancient world, they would bring essential oils derived from indigenous plants, resins and barks in the areas they were traveling in back to their own home lands. Many of these transplanted essential oils and herbal medicinals then became a routine part of the healing protocols and 'old wives' medicine cabinets in the new areas where they were being introduced. Some of the most fascinating uses of essential oils and herbals - in both some very successful ways and some very unsuccessful ways - happened during the Bubonic Plague in Europe. For instance, many people on this forum are familiar with different versions of Thieves' Oil or Thieves' Vinegar, which were purportedly used during and after the Plague to ward off illness, for healing and recovery and to use in environmental cleansing. The Thieves' Oil and Thieves' Vinegar blends are examples of successful essential oil and herbal medicinal blends to come out of that age.

I personally began using essential oils, herbs and spices in healing and in my home environment at a very young age because I was lucky enough to have a grandmother who grew her own herbs in a fairly vast and very diverse herb garden. She made her own healing preparations in the form of tinctures, hydrosols, balms, poultices, teas, etc., many of which she passed on to me.

For beginners, and even for those of us who are more experienced, buying essential oils can seem daunting due to price, variances in quality and a vast array of different oils with different essential properties and purposes. In Part II of this article (to follow), I will discuss the basic oils that I recommend to begin with in order to start a good herbal medicine cabinet more in depth, uses, precautions and storage, as well as further essential oil sourcing, among other tips.

Basic beginning essential oils to have on hand:

Lavender
Peppermint
Clary Sage
Clove
Frankincense
Eucalyptus
Tea Tree
Sweet Orange
Lime
Lemon
Rosemary
Rose Geranium
Oregano
Spearmint
Ylang Ylang
Roman Chamomile
Cinnamon Bark

I will expound upon this list in the next few posts and also include what I consider to be my 'essential' essential oils for home use, for travel, for pets and for children. Among the list above, a good place to begin an essential oils kit foundation, particularly for Morgellons and Lyme sufferers, is with the following oils:
Lavender, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Clove, Oregano, Lemon, Orange, Eucalyptus and Rosemary.

SOME VERY IMPORTANT NOTES:

There is a select group of essential oils considered safe for pets and children under 10 years of age. I will make sure to cover this explicitly in the next post. Please always exercise extreme caution and restraint when using essential oils on or around young children and pets.

There are certain oils that should never come in direct contact with skin or mucous membranes other than in rare instances. These more caustic oils should generally be diluted with carrier oils, butters or distilled water. Please see Part II for this information as well. Questions regarding this can also be referred to forum leaders or myself through Mel.

Mel, Craig and several others have mentioned different companies and online sources for essential oils. With the forum administrators' guidance, we can continue to add to this list of sources. However, for the purposes of our maiden article here, I have included below a brief listing of my own primary sources for oils. I chose these sites based on purity, ethical sourcing and knowledge, as there are so many essential oils companies and sites with varying degrees of quality and only semi-verifiable sourcing in some cases. In general, you want to buy oils that are high quality, which means they are being produced without chemicals or additives and are coming from organic plants as often as possible in order to avoid chemical and pesticide toxicity. Essential oils should also always come from plants grown in their native regions to encourage purity and responsible harvesting. Unfortunately, most of the time when you see essential oils that are incredibly cheaply priced, you will get what you pay for in terms of quality, aroma, shelf-life and, ultimately, healing.

Many thanks to our forum forerunners and leaders for their sage advice and support. I hope this thread and the mini articles herein will serve to not only inform but will also spark an exchange of knowledge and ideas that will further assist in our communal healing process. I am sincerely grateful to all of you and am blessed to have become a part of this community.

Dear Deanna,

Praying that you will soon be through the recent setback and that you will know when and how to rest and know that even in this God is working for good.

Thank you for your recent post about essential oils. You can see I'm keen as I found the thread!

As and when you have time I would be so grateful if you could share some of the ways you use your essential oils.

Love and prayers, Ruth

Thank you for all of this great information! I have been trying out various essential oils over the past two years and it's helpful to see some of the oils that you recommend. I have tried almost all of the ones you've recommended and need to restock my supply of some of them.

Tea Tree/Melaleuca
Oregano (rub on the arch of your feet)
Frankiscense
Lavender
Peppermint
Clove
Rosemary

One that I didn't see mentioned is VETIVER. It helps with ADD/brain fog symptoms which is why I got it. Interestingly, if you rub 1-2 drops of vetiver on your big toe (look up reflexology points to see where to rub) it works amazingly well to help you sleep. Some reviews say it works better than ambien! I let a friend try it and didn't get it back but it definitely helped me when I was using it.

Just be careful that you purchase top quality oils since cheaper is not always a good thing. I like doTERRA since they are very good about their manufacturing/purity/efficacy standards...they have to be since some of their oils you can also use internally. Essential oils are amazing and will continue to use them even after I recover from Lyme and Morgellons.
