Success! Mel has now found transportation and a place to live, and all on a budget he can (almost) manage. Achieving this goal has taken some serious dedication and creativity, and Mel has no doubt that everyone's prayers have made this possible. As you all know, Mel has a very modest budget to work with for his monthly expenses...so much so that saving back for moving costs has been impossible. This has created a tremendous challenge for him, and he wouldn't have been able to make this transition without the kind contributions of so many who love and appreciate him. The added challenge of finding a place that is clean and safe to live on his budget has been daunting. He's pushed through though...every single day, searching the internet, making phone calls, and visiting numerous places that range from the completely unaffordable to the frighteningly filthy. Mel has been so reluctant to buy a car because of the cost involved. However, with his realization that he might not be able to walk to stores, etc. in a potential new place, he finally realized the necessity of finding transportation. Thankfully, a couple of weeks ago, he was able to find a small used car for an affordable price and manageable monthly payment. He sold his beloved Rav 4 about two and a half years ago to generate additional income to cover rent increases in order to stay where he had been living, as to not interfere with the websites and all of us! On a personal note, I was so relieved because it worries me for him to not have transportation. He has wonderful friends who have driven him places on a regular basis, but it's really not the best situation for all involved. He can walk to the store from where he lives now, but I know that more than once, weather has gotten bad on his walk home and he's gotten caught in the rain and arrived home soaking wet. Finally...with the car, he was able to go out and look even more to find his needle in a haystack new home. Two weeks ago, he went out to visit a couple of apartment complexes he'd seen on the internet. On the way he saw another complex. It looked interesting! It wasn't one he'd seen online before...and he was sure it wasn't even there the last time he had a car. It looked nice from the outside. His instincts said check it out, he went in to speak with someone in the office. This sounds like a normal thing to do...right? Nope. He's done this before and found no one there, rude responses, or bait and switch prices. After a while, a person gets kind of acclimated to a certain response and he wasn't getting his hopes up, but did want to check it out. Imagine his surprise when he was greeted by a courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful lady who listened to his needs and offered some solutions. Mel was able to look at a unit and found that it was neat and clean...nicely done, (but not fancy) and...drum roll...they had a sale! Too good to be true...especially in the Reno market! The sale was $100 off per month if you get a unit on the back side of the complex facing the mountains instead of the city. This really worked out well for Mel because he actually prefers the mountain view to a city view. He couldn't believe it! Mel looked at all of their floor plans and chose their smallest unit. It was a one bedroom, one bath apartment with a 991 square feet. Mel has lived in a two bed / two bath for years. He uses one of the bedrooms as an office. A home office is a necessity since he runs a very busy website and 501 C foundation. However, this time he was willing to go with a one bedroom this time and make do to save money...but...no one bedrooms were available, and he was told that even if one was, he wouldn't get the $100 off per month...the sale was just for the two bedroom. He was very lucky...because the $100 off the two bedroom made only $29.00 more than what he would have spent on the one bedroom. The hand of God is evident here because he now has a clean, safe, affordable (almost) place to live and it will be available for him to move in to on September 12th. This is very fortunate because he has to be out of his current home by September 18th. Mel still has a bit of a mountain to climb in getting to the new place though, and he still needs our support. Here are some ways we can support our Mel as he goes through this process: He needs our prayers that he doesn't overdo it on the packing and moving while still trying to stay completely available to all of us on his usual time schedule. He needs our understanding that there might be some times we might have to wait for a response to an email or phone call around the time of his move. Mel still needs our financial help. He has been extremely careful in banking every penny he can scrape together in order to have enough to move. He's talking about moving all the boxes himself in his car in many trips to save as much as possible on the moving costs. However, Mel lives on the third floor right now. At age 72, it's probably not a good idea for him to go up and down two flights of stairs and up one to his new second floor apartment with multiple boxes, even though he still "has his guns" as he has shown in his "Melman or Melchild" pic (sorry Mel). A moving company could take care of these, but he's trying to save every cent by doing this himself. Mel is our lifeline. He needed a new place to live and some kind of transportation, and he got it...and he did the best he could in the market circumstances. It is a relief to him to have finally found some place to live, but it's still going to be a bit of a challenge financially. We need to continue to support him so he can step away from worry and focus on helping all of us. I talk to Mel every day and he always gives me his morning report...how many posts were submitted for the forum that day...how many emails...how many phone calls...how many people on the site...etc. It has become quite apparent that the number of people seeking help is increasing by a hefty percent with each passing month. He has his hands full with the site, and he must put his complete focus on it to meet the demand. We can help him by continuing to support him financially as he makes this transition by purchasing coaching time, subscribing (if you haven't already), and making donations. I know he is beyond grateful and appreciative for all the support he's received from friends from far and wide who have supported him so far in his move...but I'll let him tell you what's in his heart. I just wanted to put together a post to share this info because I started this thread. Love, Karen | ||||||
