Hello Everybody! As most in our community know, Mel has lived in Reno, Nevada for the last several years. He initially moved there from Atlanta, Georgia because he fell in love with the area when visiting. Reno has had its ups and downs for Mel…but over the last year or two, he has become increasingly aware that it’s no longer sustainable due to the very expensive cost of living. Mel works from home, so he has some leeway in where he could move, but when considering the possibilities, there were several factors he needed to take into account. Having friends nearby, cost of living, and long term sustainability were among the top considerations. Never one to make quick decisions, Mel has taken his time exploring multiple options, and finally, in July he decided he’d bite the bullet and stay in his current apartment in Reno for the time being. He shared with me that the thought of moving posed so many challenges that he wanted to sign a lease for one more year while he continued to figure out how to make such a big life change. But God had other plans. Shortly after Mel made this declaration, things in his life changed on a dime. On the evening of August 4th, Mel was sitting in his easy chair after dinner watching tv. His easy chair is in his bedroom which is located in the back of his apartment. He began to smell smoke and when he went to explore, discovered his stove and the microwave above it were on fire. It was barely controllable, but between Mel and the two guys who live above him who had smelled the smoke and came running, they were able to finally put the fire out before it spread further. It’s been an adventure for Mel since. The management at the apartment complex has been difficult and slow to respond to say the least. So far they’ve only removed the stove, microwave and a couple of upper cabinets and have done some minor clean up. They did supply Mel with a new stove which they broke while removing it from the packing box, but with these minimum remediations, Mel has been able to manage to (just) function in this environment. This is not to say it’s been easy. The lingering smell of smoke, along with the toxic environmental residue left from burning plastic, etc. has created a challenge that would be difficult for any of us. If that wasn't enough, he’s had to spend considerable time taking care of the endless details of dealing with inspectors, adjusters, insurance people, consultants, and finally (among endless other things) even having to file a complaint with the Nevada Housing Authority and consult an attorney. The insult to injury has been how he’s been treated by the management of his apartment complex throughout this ordeal. Prior to the fire, he’d been offered a lease renewal with a $50 per month increase. However, after the fire, they were ready to conveniently forget this and even attempted to not renew his lease at all. The attorney from the Housing Authority had to contact them and let them know that was not going to work and the best they could come up with was letting him live in the apartment month to month and a couple of other even less desirable options. So…suffice it to say, nothing was looking very good at that point. But…as mentioned before…God had other plans. And as it seems, God wasn’t fooling around. Mel has a best friend named Ritchie. Mel and Ritchie go way back…they originally met when playing semi-professional hockey together many years ago. In the ensuing years, they’ve continued to be good friends and at one time even owned a business together among other things. Not long after Mel had to retire from the Oreck store they owned together in Reno, Ritchie moved back east and finally settled in Crossville, Tennessee. Crossville, Tennessee is known as “the land of a thousand lakes.” It is in the eastern part of the state nestled in some of the most beautiful country in our nation. Ritchie lives on one of the lakes and enjoys an active lifestyle among other retirees when he’s not traveling. Because of this, Mel has seriously considered moving to Crossville, but the reality of making it happen seemed overwhelming. The distance from Reno to Crossville is over 2200 miles. The logistics of finding a place from so far away, orchestrating a move, having a place ready for when he arrived with utilities turned on, a bed to sleep in upon when he got there, etc.…not to mention getting his car there seemed like a mountain too big to climb. Mel is amazing for his age…but his age is almost 77 years old. He thrives on routine. He lives for his schedule and things most familiar. He has a community depending upon him to stay connected. Over the last 13 years of delivering this service, he has had very few days where he’s been unavailable to our community even after car wrecks, surgery, a local move, and many more challenges. The thought of having to be out of pocket for a few days straight while moving and getting his technology back up and running at a new place is even more upsetting to Mel than a kitchen fire. But two things happened that changed everything. 1. Mel had renter’s insurance. The insurance people were very good to him. The adjuster came out and valued his belongings at a price which will enable Mel to financially make the move and replace everything. This was an absolute God Wink…the Hand of God…letting Mel know that he will be supported in the details he will need to get into a better place to live. 2. The perfect place suddenly became available. Ritchie found it online. It’s a lovely townhouse just four minutes away from Ritchie’s place and it’s a short term lease. The owner spends winters in Florida and just wants to lease it out until May. It is furnished…it even has dishes in the cabinet. All expenses and utilities are covered in the rent, and the rent is less than what he pays in Reno! The property sits overlooking a lake with a beautiful view from the deck. Mel loves to fish and he could just envision himself putting a hook in the water and relaxing on his days off. Finding this place was a definite dream come true because now all Mel will have to do is sell off or give away all but a few of his belongings, arrange shipping for the few things he does need to keep, pack his suitcase and hop on a plane. And that’s exactly what he’s going to do! The seven months he’ll have in this short term lease will enable him to take his time to look for a permanent home there and slowly make purchases to replace his belongings. He has figured out that the best financial decision about his car is to sell it back to the dealership in Reno and then to lease a car when he gets to Crossville. He drives so little, he is a perfect candidate for leasing…he doesn’t need to own a car at this stage of his life. Thankfully, he’ll have Ritchie there to pick him up from the airport and get him home…and then to a car dealership in the next few days so he can get wheels again. When this townhouse became available last week, Mel knew he could not pass it up. Since then, he’s moved at the speed of light. He’s contacted the realtor, completed the paperwork and has been approved…although…when he left me a voicemail singing his “I’ve been approved” song, I had to really think to try to figure out why he was singing that he’s been a prune or…a prude…but then I got it. Sometimes there are things lost in the translation between a NYC accent and a deep fried Texas accent even though we’re (supposedly) speaking the same language. He sent his check today, and once they receive it, they’ll send him his new lease. The new townhouse is available on November 1st and Mel already has his plane ticket! This is a very exciting time in Mel’s life and I haven’t seen him so happy in a long time. I don’t know how he’s having the energy for everything he’s doing. His current apartment complex is sending people in to start painting on Monday, and today, he listed all of his belongings (although he’ll keep his bed, a chair and his office desk until the day he moves) on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. He’s already sold a couple of things…but with multiple items it’ll surely be a lot of coming and going in his apartment before moving. There will be lots of disruption but it’s all working out so much better than he could have ever dreamed. In the meantime, Mel still has quite a list. One thing he needs to do which he declared he’d never do is to get a cell phone. Yes…Mel is probably the last person on the planet to only have a house phone. So…now he has to get one and figure out how to use it. I have been loudly declaring from Texas…NO FLIP PHONES!!!! In my opinion Mel needs a smart phone…if for nothing else, he’s going to need the GPS for getting around in a new place. He’ll certainly need a phone to travel…although Ritchie will pick him up at the airport…it is just not safe to not be able to communicate when traveling a long distance. I use AT&T and have an iphone…but I’m sure Mel could get a better deal elsewhere and get an android. So…if anyone has some good tips on the best deals, please let him know. He also needs to find the most economical way to move the remainder of his belongings. These include some art, his office items, and a few other things. He’s looked into containers, but they’re expensive. These aren’t things he’ll need right away, and it could be a slow move, but he’s very interested in finding the best price to ship things long distance. If anyone knows the best way to do this, please do let Mel know. There are many other things he still needs to do, but he has been given the time to do so. He had enough lead time to get a fantastic price on a plane ticket from Southwest (around $300) and…still has enough time to take care of all the details involved in this type of move. Sometimes good things happen under the guise of a disaster. The kitchen fire definitely has had a toll on Mel…but the silver lining cannot be described as anything other than Divine intervention. Please join me in praying that Mel’s move will be seamless and that his transition to his new state will be filled with all the joy and happiness that he deserves. Mel asked me to write a post to share all of his new and wonderful news…and you all know me…I just don’t know how to write a short post. Thank you to all of you for plowing through this epistle…but sometimes really good things happen and this news deserves to be shared in detail. Love, Karen

Praying for a safe move and a wonderful new journey. Please continue to let the Lord direct your heart because, you are definitely proof there is life after MD. I hope all who are troubled with this disease, come to understand the importance of diet, exercise, supplements and prayer. It takes time and perseverance but there is life to be lived once you recover. May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 In Christ, Laura
