Dear All, When your health is struggling, and life feels a bit smaller than you would like, I think it’s really important to have something that belongs just to you. Its good to have something you can disappear into for a while. Something that takes your mind away from symptoms, limitations and all the other things that can occupy far too much space in your head. Mel often talks about how much he loves his train sets! He’s not just putting together a few trains and tracks — he’s creating an elaborate little world around them, complete with a whole background and life. And that is wonderful. He can lose himself in it, build it, change it, improve it and simply enjoy it. Then there are his wonderful plants. And me? Well, I threw myself into my garden. I wanted to make it beautiful. Somewhere I could sit, look around and think, Yes. I made this. Somewhere peaceful, colourful and alive. I put a lot of energy into it because it mattered to me. Unfortunately, my garden has recently acquired an unexpected landscaping contractor. Mr Mole. Or possibly Mr and Mrs Mole. Who knows? Frankly, they have been working overtime. After all the effort I put into making the garden lovely, watching molehills appearing everywhere is enough to drive me absolutely round the bend. It has become something of a battle of wills between me and Mr Mole. And then there is Mr Hedgehog, who apparently feels that my garden is not quite complete without his personal contribution of... unsavoury little decorations. Whilst he treats my garden nightly as if its a French diner and takes his fill and leaves discarded snail shells everywhere:-). Thank you, Mr Hedgehog. Your artistic input has been noted. But Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a garden. There will always be obstacles, setbacks, things that don't go according to plan — and apparently, occasionally, small underground creatures with a passion for rebellion and destruction!!! So I shall fight back. Gently, but determinedly. Because I want my garden. I want somewhere beautiful to sit, somewhere that gives me pleasure, and somewhere I can look at the things I've cultivated and smile. And I think that's so important when your health isn't great. It doesn't have to be a garden. It doesn't have to be impressive. It doesn't even have to make sense to anybody else. Maybe it's writing poetry or short stories. Maybe it's knitting or crocheting. Maybe it's painting, drawing, photography or making things. Maybe it's doing jigsaws, reading, baking, growing plants, building model railways or collecting something that makes you smile. Maybe it's singing. Maybe it's joining an online writing group or singing group when getting out to a group isn't possible. Maybe it's gentle armchair yoga when your energy is limited. Whatever it is, the important thing is that it gives something back to you. A hobby can be much more than a way of passing the time. It can give your mind somewhere else to go. It can give you a sense of purpose, creativity and achievement. It can remind you that you are still capable of creating beauty and joy, even when other parts of life feel difficult. And sometimes it can simply give you something ridiculous to get annoyed about ...like a pesky mole!!! We can't always choose what happens to our health or what life throws at us. But sometimes we can choose the little corner of life that we nurture. So, what's your thing? Something that is simply about you. Love Chrissie | |||
