Back then Christmas was lovely, my dad made the effort of putting up a tree, decorations around the house, drink wine and minced pies (thought minced pies were made with minced meat as a child) whilst watching christmas tv as a family with the fireplace on. On Christmas day, the classic christmas songs would be playing (by classic i mean slade as opposed to carols), my dad loved music, whilst he would cook in the kitchen. My dad was a great cook, but also like many great cooks I suppose, chaotic and messy - I am the same in some respects. You could feel the tension between my mum and dad build as she got in his way trying to wash up as he went along (it is, i also agree very annoying, but it is her way). Inevitable argument, calm down for dinner. After dinner, it was scrabble and monopoly. Still makes me laugh and smile how serious we all took it, how my dad became outraged, infuriated, by an absolute steal of a deal taking the yellows and thrwating his mayfair, park lane hegemony! Boxing day would be a large family gathering at my grandparents, lots of food and wine. Sadly we were a family of high spirits and arguments and more would rise up. However my great Uncle would quitely sit in another room when all the shouting was going on and would share how to approach cutlery at a restaurant, starting with the outside working your way in. Also the engine in the honda fell out on the motorway on the way home. Eventful and fond memories. We don't have that anymore, but I would like to bring our family traditions back in years to come. | |||
