Hi, Cathy.
Congratulations! Becoming a grandparent must be very exciting for you!
I am a step-grandparent to the children of my stepsons from a previous marriage. I love them both very much. They both had their first children within the past two years.
I have never held my step grandson. I didn’t want to hold my step granddaughter, but she was thrust into my arms, fortunately with a blanket between myself and her. I immediately turned her over to someone else.
I have spoken to both of my stepsons and explained to them why I couldn’t hold the baby. I am closer to one of my stepsons, and I told him the entire truth. He was very compassionate and told me that he would respect my desire to not have personal contact with his daughter. I told him that I could still love the baby without holding her...that, actually, not holding her was an expression of my love for her. I would never want to harm her or anyone else.
I know there are other people who have held their grandchildren, but I am personally not comfortable with it, mainly because there are things we don’t really know about Morgellons. I think everyone has to decide for themselves what they want to do when it comes to family.
I will keep you in my prayers.
Jamie
