Just a few thoughts back on the pH and bicarbonate of soda topic: Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda does require some precaution in terms of sourcing, as Peter affirmed. But there are several very good, cheap, natural sources of unadulterated, aluminum-free baking soda or bicarbonate available. Many people get baking soda confused with baking powder - baking powder seems to be the more chemically laden of the two. All that said, I continue to use a natural bicarbonate 1/2 tsp once or twice a day in 3 tbsps of organic lemon or lime juice - or the juice of 1/2 a lime or lemon - to help regulate pH. I do always only use organic citrus juice or citrus fruits because it is much better than conventional citrus, which is sprayed with a lot of pesticides. I buy two different lemon juices: Italian Volcano Organic Lemon Juice from Costco at $3.99 or so for nearly a litre (usually sold in 2 bottle pks for approx $5.99) when I can get it at our local Costco. The other brand I buy for lime juice and lemon is Santa Cruz Organic Lime Juice (or lemon) from Vitacost or Whole Foods from $4.29 to $4.99 for 16 oz. It has definitely helped. While I believe consuming lemons and limes has multiple benefits: antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and alkaline; I also believe the addition of a very small amount of natural baking soda is helpful to neutralize acid in the digestive system. I say this hesitantly because I hope I'm not stepping on any toes and I certainly defer to others' expertise, but I do feel confidently that natural, unadulterated bicarbonate of soda is very safe and cost-effective. I use it for pH balance internally as well as in homemade deodorant, to clean in the home and for detox foot soaks and baths.
