Hello Folks
Over the course of the many years now during which I have come alongside people with MD, I can recall instances where so called "skin tags" have demonstrated in some folks and caused genuine concern. So the Holy Spirit put it on me to share about them in this post. It thus fulfills my hope that if you are seeing them arrive on your skin, you will not become fearful about them
SO WHAT ARE SKIN TAGS?
Skin tags are made of collagen (a type of protein) and blood vessels surrounded by skin. They are usually found in the folds of the skin, for example, in the armpits, groin, thighs, eyelids, neck or under the breasts. Skin tags look different from warts and other benign skin lesions because of the small stalk that attaches them to the skin. They sort of just hang down. They grow both in men and women. The important consideration for you is to know that they are generally benign, which means "non cancerous."
But what "IS" mportant to understand, from a functional medicine perspective, is what they can tell us. And that becomes understanding that they can be a symptom of type 2 diabetes! This means that if you see them develop , you should ask yourself if you have had a recent A1C blood test. This is a blood test that your doctor can request that indicates insulin resistance and is the primary monitor for type 2 diabetes. So seeing skin tags arrive, should probably move you to consider to ask your primary care provider about this test. Hope this may be of use to some of you.
Blessings, Peter
