9/9/2015 4:45:39 PM | Hey Everyone (Hi Mary, Hi Peter), It is already September. Wow, time sure flies when learning new things to regain my health. I promised Mel a couple of times that I would post so below are couple bullets on items that I have learned on my journey to have a healthier body, mind and spirit. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (10 months on protocol, 2.5 years since craziness started) in being healthy thanks to this website so pretty happy to share what I can. Some of the items I post may seem impractical at this time if you are really sick so focus on few things on this website that will get you better (i.e. protocol, being calm, clean environment, reduce sugar / eat veggies, reach out to Mel or post questions), and then continue to learn, read and add new things to your life for overall good health. Looking at managing my health has changed so so much in the last few years dealing with this problem I know that I will continue evolving throughout my life. Manage sugar, carbs and fats – I use app called myfitnesspal as general guideline for diet. It is free app and just need to set up userid and password so when you log in it will keep history of your input. Do searches on foods (ie MaraNatha No stir almond Butter) consume for the day and the database/ app will track you daily sugar, carbs, protein, sodium, fats. In my old diet I ate so much sugar & carbs (processed foods) that this was useful tool. As I improved my knowledge on diet then I could use this tool to see any trends when I was not improving or not feeling well. Consuming too much sugar is big no no for this illness, but carbs turn into sugar so need to watch those too. Also, need to get those veggies in every day, but protein is needed as well as sodium. I researched and learned since I thought the numbers set in the app were a little high. For example, I consumed about 18g to 38g of sugar thru the last year and still improved. Prior to getting ill, I consumed about 5 times that amount. My friend’s wife is nutritionist and she suggested 23g daily, but google other’s input and learn your body to find the right balance. Also, it took some time to change the habit and it takes time to clean out your system so I kept working it. I tried to keep sugar at 20g and now up to 25g daily. Carbs depends on how active you are. I set up a baseline, and then updated daily to just watch the sugar then when I was feeling better and started some exercises then learned what carb level is best for me. I also started using a little more salt in my diet since seems I was low. No more swelling in my legs since increase salt (dash in my salad, dash on veggies, dash in my oatmeal). Mel suggested I increase my protein too when I was tired and it helped. When first started this app it took me a couple of times to get into the habit to track. Now, I have a set diet with about 30 favorite recipes so I only use a few times a month to see if I am on track. It also tracks water which was useful for me since I did not like water a couple of years ago. I drank coffee or vitamin drinks. Now mostly water and some herbal teas. It is important especially when sick to consume water to clean out the body of toxins. Now, I consume at least 8 glasses a day and many times a week I drink over a gallon a day. I like lemon in my water thou lime or cucumber are refreshing too. Cayenne, lemon in the water with celery has a lot of benefits so I have this regularly during the week. Manage Mold in foods - FAQ top menu on website. Print out and read regularly. I reviewed this page and thought about item 1 - toxic environment. Mold has been mentioned that if in our environment that it needs to be removed to regain our health. Since I am eating much more produce I thought I better think more about how to manage so I do not eat mold / spoiled foods. I eat a lot of onions and garlic. Refrigerate onions after cutting/ peeling since cutting introduce bacteria and putting in fridge slows the spoilage. I bought a Hutzler Onion Saver at Bed Bath and Beyond store (use coupon); it reduced the smell in fridge and seems to help make the onion last longer. Keep onions (and garlic) in dry place before cutting. Do not leave them in plastic bag. I go to the grocery 2 or 3 times a week to get fresh produce. Maybe one day I may have a garden. A year ago this concept would seem silly for me, but as I learn more about foods seems like a possible option. Remove negative thoughts and chatter. As I was improving I noticed that my thoughts were getting pretty busy. Not in a good way. I had a melt down about 7 months into the protocol since I went thru so much with this illness it had to come out. I realized that this emotional breakdown was not a good thing to do since drains my energy. My mind continues to be busy for couple of months since I felt I was not improving at the rate I expected. Sound familiar? Also, I had other worries in my life. I realized this busy mind could be due to the fact that I did not have so much cleaning to do. Well, that is pretty cool. Also, my mind is working so that must mean I am getting better since I am thinking. That is pretty cool too. I decided I just needed to learn more and be busy so I went to the website to listen to conference calls and do some reading. What I gained from Justin’s story, under Follow the Journeys, is the control of one’s mind is huge. I did not want to eat huge piece of cake nor continue to be in bad / negative mood. Also, it is one of the things I learned from Mel is the mental aspect of this disease is just as important as the protocol, cleaning and the diet. That is why he reminds us to look around when your mind is too busy with worry and fear; look around at all the beautiful things and be sure to laugh. The self negative chatter is huge enemy. If you are negative and scared you need to calm down. Freaking out is not an option for getting better. Whenever bad thoughts would come into my mind or out of my mouth I would ask is this helping my health and is it helping my life this angry, fear, negativity, worry, putting self down, and the answer was always of coarse not. I changed the thoughts to positive thoughts or just became present & quiet. Patience is key too. Need to find that. At first, it was a challenge to make this change. It came up often. I guess it is part of my healing. If I hear this negative chatter now ( 8 times out of 10) I can just dismiss it, but it took some work and still working on it. I had to turn on Happy music and dance around, and it changed my mood. I love dancing so find something that makes you happy. If I was in traffic then find some fun music and sing along. Sing in the shower. Look up some jokes. Call Mel and get a joke from him. Several deep breaths helped me especially if I was uncomfortable. Cooking and enjoying a really good meal like fish and salad help me too. I got a couple of books from the library The books seem to help me the most since I would take the time to think about what I read then implement it into my life. Tolle, one of the author’s I read, suggested when you have this constant noise in your head that you should sit and acknowledge things around you. Be in the Present and not in a chattering movie. I would look at my pictures in my home, or the pillows on the sofa, the view outside the window, the kids at the pool, etc to stop the chatter or the bad mood since did not feel my best. If that did not work I would get busy cooking new recipe or go for a walk or do something. There are other great positive spiritual authors so find one that you connect to and practice looking at the positive stuff in your life or better yet just rest your mind and be in the present. Prayer works too so do it regularly. Couple of other things is I took up yoga. There are some good yoga classes on Youtube on how to breathe. Breathing intentionally can really help to be calm. I am well enough now so going to look for exercise class soon, but Youtube has many classes if need to be home. Exercising is part of health too. I stopped watching most TV since a lot of negative stuff. If I watch TV or movie they are mostly comedy or low key stuff. I had to do some reading and praying on forgiveness too. There are many people close to us that hurt us in the past, and during this illness. For me I needed to grow pass this issue. I was really upset and sad then mad. I knew I needed to just let it go for me. I want love and happiness to rule my life. Not everyone will understand or help. As Mary says below everyone has limitations so just let it go and keep moving forward. After a while of practicing this I noticed I felt much better emotionally. I am happy. I think helped physically too. The mind is very powerful so to help your health and your life I would suggest you learn to forgive and be in the moment. Don’t forget to forgive yourself too. I share this with my friends and family and we keep each other in check. Fear and stress is everywhere these days so it takes some practice and soon peace, joy and health will fill your life. Keep working it, keep praying, keep dancing since healthy life is worth it. Cheers, Nan |
