Thanks Brenda,

Lol...you're right...some references (like Jiffy Pop) are really dated.

It's like I looked up one day and realized I was no longer the "young one" in every area of my life.

Then...a blink later I realized I was the "experienced one" (code for getting older).

Then...gulp...I've recently realized I'm the OLD ONE.

No longer does my snarky reference to a macrame owl being garage sale fodder have any kind of meaning to most of those around me.

As a matter of fact, most of the people I work with and know who are not my age (code for younger...much younger) think anything with a 1970's owl on it is "vintage" and "cool." That's just one example...but from your post, I can tell you know what I mean.

So...here's another cultural reference that would make sense to someone who is not 30 or younger...

Dolly Partin.

Dolly has always worn a wig...and recently, I've realized...she is one smart lady! Wigs are so much fun!!!

Last Saturday night, I went to a birthday party for a friend. It was a "wig party"...with a bunch of women...mostly ten or so years younger than me, and all fun.

I wore a long blonde wig...very synthetic...very sparkly...very...mermaid.

It was so much fun! Something about putting that wig on just did something to lift my mood. I swung my head around...I flipped my hair over my shoulder...I giggled...I posed...I felt like (geriatric) Barbie!

Then a thought occurred to me...Mel is always saying...put cold water on your hair...put cold water on your hair!

So...I cropped out my friend and emailed Mel a pic of me in the long blonde wig complete with a flower perched on top of my head. I told him...you told me to use cold water on my hair, and look what happened!

Yep...that's me in the pic.

No longer young by a long shot...but still in the game.

LIke everyone else...the life I had...and the life I thought I was going to have at this age has been derailed and changed dramatically because of this crazy illness...including when I can retire (maybe never) and how I spend my time off (working a second job)...etc. etc. etc...but I'm not going to let that defeat me.

Life can sometimes seem kind of like a big board game.

Sometimes we get to pass go and collect $200 and sometimes we end up in "jail" for three turns (MD).

However...if we hang in there and not allow ourselves to get defeated by the "bad" throws of the dice, we can STILL have the chance of landing on Boardwalk...and I believe that with all my heart...SO...I'm still in the game.

Staying focused and upbeat about this does require some mind shifts though...and I find it helps so much to find a way to get out of the mindset of this illness as often as possible...and, to me, finding anything to laugh about really helps the most.

I wish all of you to find a way to escape thinking about this disease for as many hours out of each day as you can possibly find.

Find something to laugh about. Laura had mentioned that on a prayer meeting conference call a few weeks back...and she was so right. Laughter can help us all.

Sometimes I just find the latest comedy on Netflix or Amazon and binge watch until I can no longer. If you don't have either one of those...then there's plenty of funny stuff on Youtube too. Get out of the down mood as often as you can and at every opportunity...and it's up to us to make those opportunities happen.

Laughter puts cortizol on the run and cortizol is NOT our friend.

I hope everyone has a great day today.

Lots of hope ahead for all...I'm SO much better...I can see the light at the end of the tunnel...and if it can happen for me, it can happen for all of you too!

Love,

Karen
