This is a great thread that you have started. I am enjoying so much reading and participating in it. I looked to see if the 3 mini-series based on Dickens' novels that I mentioned in my earlier post are on YouTube. They are not. Only older movies and series based on his book are on there. The Dombey & Son that I liked so much was 2015, but I did find an earlier 1983 series in English on YouTube that I want to watch. I will watch anything based on Dickens' books. Even if it is not so great, I will continue watching, hoping a great part comes up :-) Bleak House that I mentioned before was made in 2005 and Our Mutual Friend is the 1998 BBC one. There are so many makes and remakes of his stuff. I was so excited (YAY!!!) when I saw that Dickens' books are on YouTube and I can listen to them free! I haven't read them for years and it is so much easier to listen than read. I even found A Tale of Two Cities being read by someone with a British accent (Greatest Audio Books). The PBS series I mentioned are all on YT, pay by episode, with DVDs available on Amazon. Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven, is based on the life of retail magnate Harry Selfridge, set in early 1900s London. He founded Selfridge's Department Store. All 4 seasons are on Prime for free. Victoria is based on young Queen Victoria and stars Jenna Coleman. The 1st season is free on Prime. It is currently ongoing. Poldark, starring Aidan Turner, begins with Capt. Poldark returning to Cornwall after the American Revolution. Three seasons are on Prime for free. It is currently ongoing. Mercy Street is a PBS Civil War drama. Two seasons are on Prime for free. It is currently ongoing. I read Daphne du Maurier when I was young. I always loved that kind of books. I especially loved Victoria Holt. The only book of Daphne du Maurier's that I remember though is Jamaica Inn. Who could ever forget that book? I've started watching North and South but haven't finished it yet. I'll have to look for Northern Exposure. I love some of the old classic movies like Casablanca and Key Largo (Humphrey Bogart fan). Gregory Peck was so great in To Kill a Mockingbird (Karen mentioned Harper Lee) and in just about anything. So was the lovely Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady, Sabrina, Roman Holiday, How to Steal a Million). I found my very favorite Sherlock Holmes series on YouTube free, with Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes. He WAS Sherlock Holmes as far as I was concerned. I do come back to the modern age now and then. Usually when watching TV with my husband ;-) Eureka, all 5 seasons are on Prime for free, is a quirky, fun Sci-fi series starring Colin Ferguson. The Blacklist, 4 seasons on Netflix with a 5th coming soon, starring James Spader. Turn: Washington's Spies (there I go to the past again) entire 4 seasons on Netflix. My favorite modern crime writer is Michael Connelly, specifically his Harry Bosch series. You can look on his website, michaelconnelly.com, to get the order of the books. I think it's important to read them in order. The 1st one is The Black Echo followed by The Black Ice and The Concrete Blonde. There are 20 books in that series so far. I haven't read any new ones in the last several years. They are secular books and they do have some language, etc. I don't remember there being a lot but I always just skipped over whatever I didn't like. A good Christian book series is the Love Comes Softly books. I read some of them years ago. The following videos based on those books are on YouTube free!!! I've seen most of them and they are really good. Love Comes Softly, Love's Enduring Promise, Love's Long Journey, Love's Abiding Joy, Love's Unending Legacy, Love's Unfolding Dream, Love Takes Wing, Love Finds a Home, Love Begins, Love's Everlasting Courage, Love's Christmas Journey. Karen, reading your post describing you watching the shows you like and even describing how you like series with LOTS of episodes made me laugh so much :-) Thank you both, Chrissie and Karen, for sharing your favorite authors, books, and shows! I hope others will join in. Cheryl | |||
