Good to hear that you are considering a whole house system. Allow me to make a few suggestions. Get the latest lab reports from your water company to find out if they fluoridate and heavy metal readings as well as TDS (total dissolved solids or hardness). If you get a water bill calculate what your average monthly usage is. This will help you to calculate when it is time to change filters. Assuming they use chlorine to disinfect, with a simple pool chlorine test kit you can determine the residual chlorine levels at your faucet. You will need to have decent water pressure as the filters will reduce pressure and flow rate slightly. Now you have the information that will help you decide on your system.
I am posting a link below of a system that I have employed in the past which has these advantages. Probably the least expensive whole house system, assuming you have "city" water, to install and maintain. Ease of installation, maintenance and good to excellent removal of chlorine and chlorine by-products, herbicides, pesticides and other residual chemical contaminants. Maybe you can do this sooner than anticipated. If you have any questions post them here and I will try to answer. We can all learn together!
