Certainly the question that others also want the answer to. Perhaps it is a bacterial property known as quorum sensing. Perhaps it is acetylaldehyde, a waste product of fungal die off, loading into the sub cutaneous skin in the area of the sting. Perhaps it is a histamine release in the area of the sting. In either case, I am not persuaded that it is a bite.
For me, a sting would often signal an alert as to where a spore or splinter fiber has exited the skin. So check your skin in the area of the sting for this.
I believe that every sting you may experience represents deeper detoxing. Outside of this broader answer, you will find this mystery is not an easy one to solve. Just see a as a good thing.
