12/7/2015 10:40:47 AM | Hi Ashley, I do understand how hard it feels for you to not be able to share the huge challenge that this disease is with others and how that results in you not having that support group around you. I hope that your parents were supportive and understanding when you told them but even if not, know that everyone here is willing and able to support you. My experience has been just telling two people, firstly my husband who although accepts that this is what I have, does not really support me day to day with it and just about tolerates me following the protocol. The other person is a long standing friend who I meet up with once a year and in a recent letter I mentioned this to her for the first time. Like you, I chose not to visit a doctor as I don't believe it would be helpful to me. I haven't told my mum as she is elderly and has the beginnings of dementia and it would worry her too much. I believe I would have told my dad if he was still alive as I think he would have been supportive and understood. I've not mentioned it to any one else and tell people I have a fungal condition if I need to explain my diet in company. Feeling very alone and needing support was one of the main reasons I looked for a forum and when I prayed and asked God for help about it this one was the one I found! Then I started reading because that is what Mel asks us to do on the home page. I started writing down in a notebook things that I learnt as I read. I also wrote down how I felt about whether I could do all that the protocol demanded. To begin with I really thought it would be too difficult for me. I felt that my biggest hurdle to being able to do everything in the protocol was my attitude: - wanting a cure to be cheap, quick and easy - feeling overwhelmed by the amount of information that I needed to get hold of - fear of having to make changes in my life - fear of other peoples' reactions to those changes and how could I explain the reasons why - fear of feeling a nuisance to others regarding diet What helped me though was that I found that as I read and read and read over four weeks through all the forum posts that my attitude changed. I found that I could make the decision to do whatever was needed to get well because of reading how others before me and been able to face their fears and make those decisions. I could take courage from the stories of others ahead of me who I read about getting well. I realised that I could take it step by step, good choice by good choice, each step taking me forward. I could also believe that God was working for good in this situation as He does in all things as I live for Him and for His purposes. Getting the diet going helped get me started on making good choices and I felt the benefit of it very quickly. I've found listening to the conference calls over and over very helpful in stopping me feeling lonely. Even in the middle of a sleepless night I can listen to Mel, Peter and John and others and drift off back to sleep. That's why I have to listen to them over and over! Sharing my experience on the forum helps me to feel a part of the community even though so far away geographically! Hope this helps, Ruth |
