12/16/2011 12:27:41 PM | Hi JS, Great question about probiotics. As their descriptive name implies, probiotics are life-promoting microorganisms that normally thrive in the warm, moist environment of our bowels in a mutually beneficial relationship. Like most living organisms, they are generally susceptible to environmental extremes of temperature, pressure, acidity, and the presence of absence of food. However, certain microorganisms in nature have adapted to thrive in the most extreme of environments. In recent years, modern advancements in deep sea exploration have revealed a diversity of life forms that exist within environmental extremes we never thought possible. Likewise, probiotic research over the years has yielded strains with greater resistance. While refrigeration of your probiotics will certainly optimize the shelf life of a bottle, it is no longer necessary for most strains... especially if they are being consumed as recommended (one bottle is typically a month's supply). Keeping all of your supplements in a cool, dry, dark place is recommended to maximize their potency if you plan to store them for an extended period of time. The greatest enemy of your supplements is high heat and humidity, so don't leave them in your car. Like every other industry, supplement companies are always looking for an angle to differentiate their products, and probiotics are no different. Some companies tout refrigeration or brown glass bottles, and some microencapsulate their probiotics with plastic to protect them from stomach acid. With a few exceptions, most strains of probiotics today are temperature and acid stable. God intended that we eat probiotic laden fruits and vegetables from the earth, and He didn't microencapsulate them... neither must we. I hope this helps clear up a little of the confusion over probiotics. Have a wonderful Christmas JS and everyone else here. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Blessings, John |
