I an glad you found the answer to your mystery, But I am not sure that other's will come to the same conclusion.

'Crystalline fragments are caused from water leaks in basement that evaporate efflorescence.' per medical mycologist (with too many other environmental degrees to list). 'They are highly reflective - they sparkle and can be a dermatological irritant.'
What are they ? They are a form of silica. Silica is what glass is made from! Are we also breathing these things in? Yes - we are.
I hired this professional to examine my house because these strange shinny organisms were all over the house including the walls, clothing and my skin. Last summer I sat in the sun and my entire body was sparkling. What the heck was going on! I was sure they were some tiny flying bug that had infested our house but they seemed so perfectly shaped under a microscope - like a grain of sugar. Certainly did not look like an insect.
He found the exact source in the basement and explained how easily they can get transported around.
Stopping them temporarily was as simple as shutting off our basement humidifier/heat/airconditioning unit that was transporting them through the heat ducts to every room in the house. Also of course the basement leaks must be professionally found and correctly fixed. Because they will continually get into the basement every time water gets into the walls again.
As this man left my house he left me with this phrase - 'Things are never what they appear to be.'
Remember - There is a logical answer for everything.
