I have a dear friend of 30 years who writes incredible poetry. She teaches both English and psychology at my school...one of the most intelligent and compassionate human beings I know. She wrote this poem for all of her female friends, and I thought I should share it with all of you because, although she did not write it for us, I feel as though it applies in so many ways, except perhaps the line that references drinking wine!
“Women I Love”
Close we stand like pine trees, Branches lowered as tender arms Deepen in green shade. We welcome the smell of cool, black earth. Our common ground holds us rooted.
We speak softly over steaming Cups of tea. Words pour, Hearts grow lighter.
In the evenings we sit sometimes, Wine sparkling in glasses As we speak of children, men, and What we must let go of, And what we must hold onto, Even though fear and sadness Strip our strength. We seek a way to love what we love, And leave behind the petty grudges And weight of every day disappointments.
The day I die, I will remember Those kind eyes and generous smiles. In the pine stand we cast our shadows: These women who loved me, These women I loved.
