Well, yesterday didn’t exactly provide me with encouraging news about retirement. Sadly, at year #31, I can only collect 54.56% of the average of my top three salary years. In addition, I would have to pay completely out of pocket for my health insurance. I would only get $110 toward that cost. I can’t go on a really good Medicare plan until I am 65...and I am 53. Look at these percentages!!! Year 32: 58.24% Year 33: 62.04% Year 34: 65.96% Year 35: 70% If I can hang in there another four years, it’s a 15% difference. That’s HUGE. In addition, I’d have 4 more years of insurance, insurance that has been VERY helpful in numerous ways. I spoke with Karen earlier today, and she reminded me that this is the time of year when just about EVERY teacher on the planet wants to retire. My school year is done in mid-June, so I have to hang in there another two months until I have two months off. I have noticed that when I have stressful semesters, like this one, my urge to retire significantly increases. I have decided one thing, though. I am now going semester by semester. My department chair has promised to lighten my load next year, and he is very trustworthy. I know he will do everything he can to help me out because he is very aware of my situation. We have worked together for about 25 years. Tomorrow, I am also speaking to a lawyer for the Connecticut state teachers’ union. She ran the workshop I attended yesterday. I told her my plight, and we are going to take a look at disability, but I have a feeling that won’t be a viable option, either. I know if I went out on disability, my retirement years would still accumulate, but I would take a huge pay and insurance cut. I’m not even sure I would qualify. That’s my sad news. And it is sad news. I had such high hopes that I would be able to retire, but it just isn’t financially feasible right now. Sometimes, God works in really mysterious ways. Maybe I still have students He wants me to positively impact, either personally or educationally. I’m going to go with that notion because then I’m less apt to feel sorry for myself! LOL! I also need to remind myself (constantly!) to just deal with my life 24 hours at a time...less, if necessary. I’m so bad at that. Sigh. I continue to keep all of you in my prayers, especially Karen and Cheryl this week. I’m sure God is literally inundated with prayer requests for both of them!!! Jamie | |||
