Is that you Jamie?
Hello, everyone!

I have decided to add another goal to my list. Some of you may remember that I have set a goal for my recovery: the anniversary of Donna’s recovery: May 4, 2020. She is such an important person to me—she was the first community person I ever spoke to on the phone. She’s always been there for me; she truly has a heart of gold, and I am so happy that she is well again!

My new goal occurred to me the other day. About a year before I became ill, I ran the Pittsburgh half-marathon with my younger sister. She kicked my royal behind (like she has always done in every single sport we have ever participated in together!), but it was a wonderful sisterly endeavor. We have lived 10 hours apart for our entire adult lives, and we haven’t seen each other as much as I would have liked. We fought like cats and dogs when we were younger (we REALLY did!), but my memory of us running together is quite dear to me.

SO...

I have decided that when I get well, I intend to run another half marathon, hopefully with my sister. Although right now this seems like quite the ambitious notion, I think it is important to me to set this goal in addition to my original one. Running used to be the way that I decompressed from stress and anxiety...and I do believe it used to help me to detox my body.

SO...

I have run the past two days. When I say run, I really mean jog, because that is all I can do at this point. And when I say jog, I mean only a wee bit. Right now, I am only running about a 1/4 of a mile (like one lap around the track) because that is enough. I have started to do this after my 2 or 3-mile walk that I have tried to do on the days of this summer when I have felt up to it.

Mel told me to take it easy, and he is correct. I will slowly, and I mean slowly (“slow and steady”!!!) increase the distance that I run. If I don’t take it “slow and steady,” the largest hockey stick in the world is going to magically appear and knock me right off my feet!

Actually, although he doesn’t know it (well, now he does!), Mel was the inspiration for this goal. At one point, Mel couldn’t even walk. He told me a story about a man who inspired him. If Mel could regain his ability to walk, then darn it, I can run another half marathon!

I keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers!
