Hi friends and fellow warriors!
Just thought I would post, as I am beginning my 20th month on the protocol. What is happening? Well, a lot!
Everything you have heard about the final stage of this journey being tough is true! I now know it! Boy, has it been rough riding these last few weeks...LOTS of biting, stinging--zap, pow, wham--a hostile blitzkrieg on my body! I had not changed my diet, had not changed my drops (6 and 6), had not changed my sleep..so why the sudden storm?? It was very confusing, discouraging and depressing. I had days where I could not do anything by lie on the couch, in a state of utter torpor. I could barely go for a walk, let alone do housework or chores. Headaches galore, nausea, weakness, dizziness, and extreme fatigue. Purging of white and occasional black specks, and gooey sand in my eyes in the morning, and purging tiny amounts of blue fibers in the bathtub. Mel assured me that all these nasty symptoms are pretty normal for some of us as the disease fights back, hard. Mel encouraged me to read Thomas' journey, which I did, and that helped. He went through H-e-double hockey sticks at the end, too. I talked to Tracy who was flat in bed for weeks, as well. She gave me lots of hope and encouragement. She is now feeling much, much better, thank God! I was comforted by that, and just hung in there, scared, downhearted, discouraged and desperate.
After all this misery, one day, a few days ago, I woke up feeling terrific! How strange it all is. No gooey sand in my eyes for the first time, and no symptoms at all! Now, I've been on this journey long enough to know that it is highly cyclical, and that it isn't over yet. I have no reason to celebrate. I expect more skirmishes, and battles when the moon waxes full this week. (I have come to have a very fraught relationship with the moon! I will never look at a beautiful full moon quite the same way again!)
For new people reading this, here's what I am doing to get better:
1) Doing everything Mel suggests in our coaching sessions (I even ordered some Ahava body cream--he's right, it is fabulous!)
2) Cold-water rinse of my head every day or every other day -- it gets easier with practice, truly!
3) Added Saw palmetto, hyaluronic acid supplements to my morning and lunch pills to help my hair (it is helping!). My hair is looking fuller, shinier, and healthier.
4) STRICTLY adhering to the diet! I was very naughty early on, and went wildly off the diet...it set me back months in my recovery. I rue those days now...just because you feel wonderful, with no symptoms does NOT mean you get to cheat and drink wine, eat ice cream, and dance the night away!
5) Taking supplements on time--sometimes, I forget and once or twice, have skipped dinner pills. It happens. No biggie, just get back to it the next day!
6) Getting daily exercise and fresh air--super important for mental health too! I try to walk briskly every day, and bike around the neighborhood and town, too.
7) Meditation and stretching--this really helps to de-stress.
8) Sleeping 8 hours a night, and when that can't happen, napping, and resting as much as possible. I can't stress enough how important SLEEP is!! Mel once said in one of the old conference calls that tons of sleep alone is almost enough to cure us, and I now understand what he meant. It is when our bodies can rejuvenate, and our immune systems go to work to fight this thing.
9) Water! Drinking tons of it. It helps to flush out our livers, kidneys, keeps our skin supple and it keeps us hydrated, as the wps can dehydrate us.
10) Reading the forum, listening to conference calls. I ask for help from others in the community when I have a problem, or am feeling down. I can't tell you how helpful it is to be able to reach out and get support when we most need a little boost.
11) wps baths--once or twice a week, and only showering every other day. The main thing is to give your skin a day of no bathing so it can heal. I do spot sponge baths, and wash my hair in the sink, in between.
12) Lots of apricot oil, coconut oil, and creams on my skin to keep it moisturized. Dry skin makes purging more difficult.

Purging from the skin as I do (some of us purge internally, and rarely see specks) can be painful and a bit frightening. Sometimes it feels like sharp plastic or glass coming out. Now, I just don't let it phase me. I carry on, and remind myself, better out than in! This whole journey reminds me of being lost in a large, dark, frightening forest, where we are attacked by bloodthirsty beasts whom we cannot see, we wander for days, without the comfort our of favorite foods and drinks, not knowing if we are headed in the right direction, and occasionally, we meet up again with those beasts who bite and terrify us...til one day, we stumble out into the sunlight and see a beautiful meadow full of flowers before us, and the beasts are gone. You would think it was all just a terrible nightmare, if you had not just lived it...!
Here's to our collective health! May we all meet up in the meadow, and soon!
Love, Maria
