I sure hope you enjoyed my story at yesterdays fellowship! if you missed, here it is.
Back in 1942 when I was born, many families lived on a farm.
My dad inherited the farm from his parents and that's where I grew up.
It is now a centennial farm in Michigan.
My parents raised chickens for the market when I was young. We had a brooder house that held many baby chickens It was about 6 feet wide and 12 feet long and had about 6 layers high. Around the outside of each layer was a trough with water and feed.
The brooder was where I fell in love with chickens and loved to watch them. Eventually they outgrew the brooder house and were moved to the chicken coop. So I started going into the chicken house and playing with them and making friends with them. Well one thing led to another and I eventually started dressing them up in clothes and pushing them around in my baby buggy. Well that only lasted a short time and they would fly out. One time one of the chickens claw caught my face and scratched it up, but that didn't deter me from playing with MY chickens. To this day I still love chickens. My folks raised leghorns but my favorite are Red Rocks. My current neighbor has chickens and I love to hear them sing.
We also had a duck that was supposed to be a chicken but somebody goofed. When he grew up the feathers on the top of his head stood straight up - we called him top notch. He was pretty tame and he lived a long life on the farm just waddling around. |
