Well we always had a large garden on the east side of the driveway. Every spring my dad would plow and disc it so we could plant. Sometimes we planted from seeds and sometimes we bought plants at the local greenhouse. So this particular year we bought some plants including some pepper plants which were supposed to be regular green peppers as we didn't eat spicy food. Well we planted all the plants and waited until they matured and the peppers were ready for picking. We picked and picked and brought them into the house and of course we tasted them - who can resist fresh vegetables. It took about 2 or 3 chomps down on one of the peppers to realize they were hot and I mean really hot. We should have known but we didn't as we had never grown hot peppers before. Anyway we ran into the house to get some water to drink and found out that didn't really help.
Well we got this really bad idea as kids do and didn't share it with our folks. We took the hot, hot peppers and threw them to the pigs in the pig yard. Of course they came to see what we had thrown them and smelled them and then started eating them. Pigs will eat just about anything. I will never forget these pigs reaction. They started licking the dirt and oinking and doing what we call the "Happy Dance". I will say it was so funny watching that we couldn't resist and gave them some more and their "Happy Dance" became more lively. We finally decided we better not give the more hot peppers. We finally told our folks and they laughed too but didn't say anything. The picture of the pigs is etched into my mind forever. |
