Hello Everyone,

I saw this and immediately thought of Mel and then understood why he is always saying" NEVER GIVE UP HOPE".

Mel was told he was in bad shape...probably not as bad as the man in the video - but after thirteen months in three different hospitals and four operations Mel was told in 1980 he would never walk again.

It took Mel four years before he could walk with a very bad limp and it deteriorated to the point where he had to use a walker by 2011.

Mel searched for over thirty years for a doctor who would even attempt an operation. This was extremely discouraging until Mel met a doctor who he now refers to as "The Magician."

Dr. Osgood told him that no one doctor could fix his hip and pelvis, but he would assemble a three man team and try. Dr.Osgood had been treating major ski accident patients for many years in Truckee CA. He told Mel his hip was the worst he had ever seen but they would try.

Well...the surgery worked, and the lesson here is this...Mel did not give up on doing every single thing he had to do to move forward, even in the face of tremendous roadblocks and discouragement. He continued to push forward leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of reclaiming a life worth living. The result? Now Mel stands tall and walks only with a slight limp when he's very tired. He refers to himself as "Yoda" when he recalls his time using a walker. His situation had deteriorated to the point where he was almost bent double and shuffling along. His continuous search for answers along with cosistently taking care of his health in every other way he knew how literally changed his life at 67 years old. Most people would have given up long before this point in their lives, but Mel did not. He's lived joyfully after getting well from that surgery...but immediately after healing...surfing was at the top of his list.

So...when Mel says "don't give up," he knows what he's talking about. His message is one of such joy and hope. The video on this post is so inspirational as well. Think about these things if you are ever tempted to give up. There is always hope.

Now we all understand WHY
Mel never wants any of you to ever GIVE UP HOPE.

Love,

Karen
