Endless Hope

Where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me?

Job 17:15
The patience of Job is commonly misunderstood to mean that Job meekly accepted all that came his way. The truth is that Job accepted nothing without a fight. He experienced depression, suicidal fantasies, rages at God, and seductive temptations to call it quits.

Throughout it all, though, Job did not give up. He retained a patient hope that his friends did not have. They chose not to go in search of the real God, the One it takes time and suffering to get to know. Much like his ancestor Jacob
(Gen. 32), Job wrestled with God and wasn't about to let go until God in His fullness satisfied his soul.

In the subtitle of her book, Living with Chronic Illness, Cheri Register refers to life with illness as "days of patience and passion." Job allowed his own passionate feelings expression, patiently hoping in God to be larger than anything he might think or feel.

Henry Gariepy writes, "Life with Christ is an endless hope, without Him, a hopeless end."

O Lord, how grateful I am for the unshakable confidence that is mine today in Christ Jesus, in Whom I patiently hope.
