DECEMBER 23 HOLY COMFORTER
Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord comforts His people and will have compassion on His afflicted ones. Isaiah 49:13
The cold winter winds of illness can come on suddenly and send a spiritual shiver right through me. Where did it come from? I may wonder. I was warm and happy just a minute ago. When the first chill of winter comes to a forest, mice and other tiny creatures scurry in from the cold and bears begin to prepare for hibernation. They find a safe, cozy place and pull a blanket of snow over themselves, resting in its silent warmth. I can hibernate, too, and wait out the passing winter in God, surrounded by His blanket of comfort. God doesn't pull me in, but I can choose to enter into Him at any time and be protected from the biting chill of an illness that keeps coming around. When God chose to reveal Himself to the world that first Christmas, He left the comfort of heaven and hibernated for a while in a womb. From the comfort of the Father, Jesus came to comfort me.
O holy Comforter, thank You for coming to me and giving me a place of comfort in my affliction. Today my soul will rejoice and shout for joy!
