Hello Everybody,

I just listened to John B.'s podcast with Mel telling his story. If you haven't already listened to this, you'll want to make time to do so. Mel has been in my life for over two years...and he shared things most of us already knew...but hearing it all together was nothing short of amazing.

We all know Mel from his association with toxic disease...but...his life experiences have been far more challenging than toxic disease alone.

Even as close as I am to Mel, it's difficult to wrap my mind around the reality of his history. The good things that happened to him in his life are almost unbelievable. As a matter of fact, I was kind of skeptical when I'd heard about all he'd done in his life...it all sounded like way too much for one person to have ever done in one lifetime. Actually...I thought he was making at least some of it up. Not so...his history has been diverse to say the least.

Mel had been a model for five decades (he started at age 14 with a contract to Eileen Ford modeling agency and worked on and off until age 59), had contracts with big clothing brands to model exclusively for their lines, played semi-pro hockey for several years, was a pilot in the Air Force, found time to get a degree in horticulture somewhere in all of this, walked runways in Italy, was a part of the 1970's party / Studio 54 crowd in Manhattan...went to school with celebrities (including Patty Duke...I'm still laughing about how he picked her up, desk and all and moved her because she sat in his spot in class and wouldn't get up)...owned several businesses including, but not limited to horticulture related businesses, a clothing company (where he became a millionaire in his twenties), part owner of an air hockey team (where he lost all of his money), co-owner of two Oreck vacuum cleaner stores, and much more.

This history alone had me saying to myself...uh huh...and has he cured cancer yet? Yes...I was skeptical...but...now I know it's all true. I've been to his house...I've seen pix and other evidence of his past endeavors, I've talked to his life long friends...and...it's all true.

His life of good things is more amazing than I can really wrap my mind around...but...it seems that God has dealt Mel equal measure of heartache and challenge in his life as well. And in my opinion, the challenges have far outweighed the blessings of his life.

It would be easy to think (I would have thought) that someone who had "had it all" his whole life wouldn't be able to handle any challenges at all...let alone something as devastating as losing his health and mobility in the prime of his life. Most people would have folded and crumpled in the face of such adversity.

However...Mel did something entirely different. You'll have to listen to the podcast to hear the details, but...his response to the crisis' in his life could only be described as heroic...and his attitude remarkable.

After listening, there's no doubt in my mind that God had/has a very special plan for Mel, and all of the challenges were "school" to prepare him to help others. He was truly sent here as one of God's angels and helpers for others who are suffering as well.

Lol...don't get me wrong...he is OBVIOUSLY not a stereotypical angel...as a matter of fact, I've often called him truculent and incorrigible. If you've been a member of this community for any length of time and haven't been insulted or had your feelings hurt by Mel at least once, then you are one of the very few. Most people would like to hit HIM over the head with his hockey stick a few times because his delivery can sometimes be less than "charming."

However...as John B. says on the podcast...you can't fake Mel's level of devotion. He's been bound and determined for over eleven years to do the best he possibly can to deliver on his promise to God. He shows up...and he gives his heart and soul every single day...even on his days "off" which are kind of a joke because you can't get him to step away from it long enough to completely relax. Mel is a people person...and he cares deeply about the members of our community.

I can vouch personally for his level of devotion as well. Mel and I often discuss his future. He may be 73 years old, but there is no thought in his head about ever giving up his "post" as a helper to the toxic disease community. He made a promise to God, and he'll stick to it no matter what...to his last breath.

He carefully manages his health to make sure he can stay around for as long as possible too. With the exception of his beloved Haagen Daz coffee ice cream and Pepperidge Farm Double Milano cookies that he carefully allots himself every once in a while, he is as faithful to his own personal health protocol as he expects us to be to ours.

Yes...I am partial to Mel...everyone knows it...but the facts stand. He is a fighter and a half...and the most courageous person I know. And I'll say here what I told him last night in an email after listening to the podcast. "Mel...you never cease to amaze and impress."

Of course he loved it.

But it's still true.

Love,

Karen
