My Garden Story As you all know I was brought up living on a farm and my mother was a teacher and she had the summers off. So we gardened, canned, went to 4-H softball games and entertained relatives on vacation at our house, and we cooked dinner for those my dad had helping him baling hay. Needless to say we were busy but still had time to just sit on the front porch and watch what was going on outside. We found baby coons under our porch, saw snakes in the front yard when raking and etc. Never a dull moment. " My dad would plow the garden then disc it to prepare it for planting. He would also plant a lot of sweet corn in the edge of the corn field for the "boys" to sell to make a few dollars. They sold it off the back of the truck on M-60, then the main road between Chicago and Detroit which was about 2 1/2 miles south of us. Mother and I and my 2 brothers would plant seeds and plants in the garden. All kinds of vegetables (and yes hot peppers one year by mistake) and some flowers. Then we all would work to keep the weeds out. I, many days saw my dad out hoeing in the garden, after the evening meal. We patiently, and sometimes o so patiently, waited for the garden produce to mature even though we knew we would be helping can or freeze all of it. Of course we were able to eat it to. We had sweet corn on the cob many days when in season. My brothers, and being a girl you would think I wouldn't get involved in these kind of things, but alas sometimes I did. When the tomatoes ripened we would find some that had rotted, intentionally or not, and we threw rotten tomatoes at each other. How did my folks put up with such behavior? Probably because they did the same things. When I left home I continued to garden throughout the years but as I got busier with my family some years the garden didn't happen. But, I always had flowers even though only a few. Something about flowers and working in the soil is humbling and good for the soul. Tom and I were married, (we both had kids from previous marriages) in 1977 we had 6 kids and they all lived with us, I really started the flower gardening in ernest. Well, the kids all graduated and went on their way and Tom and I moved to the country. That's where my flower gardening went crazy and I planted and dug up the soil and planted. I was very proud of my gardens. Of course I had to weed and water a lot but that's ok - I enjoyed it. I had intended to sell flowers and had the state inspect my gardens for disease and approve them to sell. I did get licensed to sell, but alas in 1996 my oldest son passed away and in my trying to deal with the emotions around that I worked during the day and gardened when I was home. It seemed to help. In so doing I got out the roto tiller and tilled up a new flower garden and injured my back where today I'm extremely sensitive to vibration. I don't ride in a car except for very short distances to my chiropractor (1 quarter a mile). In 2009 I was forced to retire because I couldn't ride in a car. The last day I worked I drove the 2 1/2 mile ride home and it took me 1 hour - my L4 and L5 had slipped out of place. With patience and time I healed up and could work outside. I patiently started the long road to build a garden that would allow me to be on the Kalamazoo Garden Tour. So in 2011 I was selected to be one of the 5 or 6 houses in our city for the Tour. About 500 people came and it was very hot that day. This had been a dream of mine for a long time. We had to move into town so I was closer to work and I left the gardens I had built and started all over. Then we moved again and we dug up a trailer load of flowers and took them with us. The new neighbors were watching to see you was moving in. One said "oh, their first load is a trailer full of flowers, they are ok". It has been a joke ever since then, 15 years ago As all things change over time, my injury has gotten worse and I can no longer garden. We have taken up a lot of the flowers and given them away to other gardeners. One couple came by and wanted my grasses. They then had to come back and did them up. What a job it was and they sure got a workout over a week digging. I now have a gardner and she has become a friend. She planted some daffodil and tulip bulbs for me this fall. They really don't take much work and they offer so much beauty in the early spring. I now enjoy the few flowers that I have very much. My son will sometimes go cut a few peony flowers and bring them inside to enjoy or stop at the local grocery that has flowers and bring me home a bouquet. That's my story. I thank the Lord for all he has blessed me with over my life and the enjoyment of the outdoors and of course flowers. Blessings to all Ruth Ann | |||
